To commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking on 26th June, Trishul – Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts, joined hands with various colleges affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai to increase the awareness about drug abuse and its prevention among student community.
On 26.06.15 the sensitization programme was conducted for NSS Volunteers & Social Work Students at American College. Around 300 Student Volunteers participated in this programme. Dr.M.Davamani Christopher, Principal, American College, in his felicitation address said about the core objective of International day against Drug Abuse and Illicit and Trafficking was to create awareness and motivate the NSS Volunteers to find out their role models and encouraged them to be a good citizen in the society. Mrs.R.Vaitheki, Additional Divisional Excise officer, Madurai(North), explained the importance of relationship in every one’s life and the role family plays in the development of personality and ways to improve family intimacy. There are more cases in the court like divorce, separations, crimes, illegal business and illicit trafficking because of addiction. Thiru.C. Arul Vadivel @ Sekar Advocate & Special Public Prosecutor, Madras High Court, Madurai Bench gave the Chief Guest address and his eloquent speech kindled the minds of young student volunteers to be aware of the legal aspects towards illicit trafficking. Dr.S.Ganeshkumar, MD, DPM Consultant Psychiatrist, gave the keynote address and he pointed out the ill effects of drugs causing physical and mental health problems. He suggested to the NSS students to create awareness among the general public about the ill effects of drug abuse. Mr.K.S.P. Janardhan Babu, Director Programmes, MSCTRF, focused on how to identify the drug users and the role of NSS Volunteers in the society.
On 29.06.15 the sensitization programme conducted for NSS Volunteers at Thiyagarajar College. Around 250 Student Volunteers participated in this programme. Dr.T.Rajasekar, Principal, Thiyagarajar College, delivered the felicitation address. Dr.Vikhram Ramasubramanian, MD, DPM, Consultant Psychiatrist, gave a Special lecture on prevalence rates of addiction, Classification of drugs, short term and long term effects of addiction and tips to reduce the drinking.
On 30.06.15 the sensitization programme was conducted for NSS Volunteers of Sri Meenakshi Govt Arts College. Around 150 Student Volunteers participated in this programme. Dr.Karthikeyan, MBBS, DPM, Consultant Senior Medical Officer, delivered the Special lecture on prevalence rates of addiction, components of cigarette, causes of smoking and also explained about causes of cancer due to tobacco.
Mr.M.Ramu, Team leader, MSCTRF, addressed the misconception of addiction and talked about recent addiction of adolescents and role of students in the community in tackling this epidemic like addiction to substances. Mr.A.Jeyakumar, social worker, MSCTRF, oriented the group about the existence of mental health service providers like Trishul, a unit of MSCTRF, for Prevention, Treatment & Rehabilitation of people dependant on substances.
