A sensitization programme on suicide prevention on the theme “Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives” was organized by Trishul – Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts, along with S.Vellaichamy Nadar (SVN) College, Nagamalaipudukkottai (affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai).
Dr.Alagarnathan, Principal, SVN College, in his Special address appreciated the Trust for its yeomen services for persons with mental disabilities. He also explained the role of teachers as counsellors towards identifying the mental health issues among students population and also highlighted the importance of counselling self in the colleges as initiative by district administration.
Mr.K.S.P. Janardhan Babu, Director of Programmes, MSCTRF, delivered the key note address. He reported that the prevalence rate of suicide in Tamil Nadu was 12.3 %, and that males are more prone to commit suicide than female. He also explained the causes of suicide, its signs and symptoms, strategies for preventing suicide and stress management tips with few case studies. He appealed to the students that every suicide is a cry for help and that suicide is not a solution to one’s problems.
