Aakaash Special School (A unit of M.S. Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation) was started in 2000 to provide special education free of charge for children with mental disability from low income families in the villages of Madurai East.
Since inception, students of Aakaash participate in different sports events conducted by the Government and private organizations to showcase the sports talents of children with special needs. In this tradition, Apollo Specialty Hospitals, Madurai, organized a Different Prodigies Meet for persons with special needs on December 15, 2018.
The sports event was held at the Mahatma School Baba Building Playground. Dr. Rohini Sridhar, Chief Operating Officer, Apollo Hospitals, Madurai and the neurological team of Dr. S. Meenakshi Sundaram, Dr. Karthikeyan, Dr. Suresh, Mr. Ammer Hussain and other team members organized the events.
Mrs. P. Premalatha, Mahatma School Secretary and Principal; and Thiru Indira Soundarajan (novelist) were the chief guests.
The program began with the topic “God’s Own Children.” Nearly 450 students from Madurai Town participated. Eighteen children from Aakaash School participated and won prizes.
The following events were conducted: Running (80metres), standing long jump, sitting shotput, basketball, football, sitting snowball, lucky child, passing the balls, sorting the balls and other assorted games.
Aakaash Prize winners:
1. V. Vinitha –III place in Sitting Shotput
2.M. Sampath Kumar- II prize in Standing Long Jump
3. C. Pushpavalli –III Prize in Basket ball
Such events help children with special needs to:
• improve their activeness, skills and motor abilities
• relax
• understand the value of sports
• behave appropriately during play and transfer this to situations in their everyday lives.
