The 35th Annual National Conference of the Indian Society of Professional Social Work was held in Chandigarh on February 9-11, 2017. The conference was organized by the Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh.
The key organizing committee members of the conference were Dr. B. S. Chavan (Organizing Chair person), Shikha Tyagi (Organizing Secretary) and Kamlesh Kumar (Convener).
The theme of the conference was Social Stress, Resilience and Mental Health.
The conference included plenary lectures, workshop, symposium, free papers and award papers. Participants included academicians, social work practitioners and educators, researchers, social work students and professionals from various NGOs and educational institutions. Nearly 350 delegates from psychiatry, social work, and psychology disciplines participated.
Dr. C. Ramasubramanian was invited as a Guest Speaker for the plenary session on February 9, 2017. He spoke on the Art of Psychiatric Rehabilitation with the special reference to CBR: My Experience
M.S. Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation (MSCT&RF), the Madurai-based mental health services provider well known for their pioneering initiative in psycho social rehabilitation, who recently also organized the fourth national conference of the World Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR Indian Chapter IC) in Madurai on November 19, was invited by the ISPSW organizing committee, to take part in the symposium by showcasing the best practices in the field of community based rehabilitation (CBR).
A professional team led by Dr. C. Ramasubramanian, Founder, MSCT&RF; accompanied by K.S.P.J. Babu, Director of Programmes; M. Ramu, and T. Sankarapandian, Team Leaders; and S. Selvamani, Psychiatric Social Worker, participated.
A symposium on Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) was held on February 11, 2017.
Dr. C. Ramasubramanian shared his experience on Community Based Rehabilitation: Private-Public Partnership (Tamil Nadu Model).
K.S. P. J. Babu made a presentation on Social Work Interventions in CBR (The MSCT&RF experience).
T. Sankarapandian made a presentation on Livelihood Initiative through Animal Husbandry Rehabilitation Training Programme for persons with mental illness: An innovative CBR Programme
Sharing our experiences in CBR enriched the knowledge of participants and provided a road map to implement similar interventions in their respective places.
