How often do children in rural areas and villages who are differently abled get to step out of the confines of their home, fearing stigma and discrimination, to play and have some fun just like any other child? In a fitting response to this, the Community Mental Health Project (CMHP) of MSCTRF organized an entertaining leisure outing for children with Intellectual Disabilities studying in regular schools from various Village Panchayats in Madurai West Block where the community health project is functioning. These children were taken to Thirupparankundram as an outing programme on 7th February,2015. The children enjoyed the trip. Most of them were earlier not exposed to such public places by their parents due to the stigma of having to accept that the family has a child with mental disability as well as financial burden. The visit was aimed at improving parents’ and their community’s attitude towards persons with mental disabilities and reduce the burden of the parents besides eradication of stigma on mental illness. This activity was under the Community Based Rehabilitation for the Persons with Mental Disabilities, Madurai West Block, a Unit of M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation, Madurai.
