Aakaash Special School, a unit of MS Chellamuthu Trust & Research Foundation, was started in 2000 to provide free special education—free of charge—for children with mental disabilities from low income families in villages in Madurai East.
Since 2005, we at Aakaash, celebrate all important festivals to introduce our children to the importance of religion in everyday life. The children eagerly look forward to the annual Navaratri celebrations at Aaakaash.
This year too, our children joyfully celebrated Navathri in a grand manner on all the nine days. Each child was encouraged to contribute a small doll towards the golu arrangement. The dolls were neatly arranged in nine steps.
The room was decorated beautifully and the rangoli with flowers was everybody’s favourite! Our school special educators involved themselves by bringing prasadam for daily prayers. All the children visited the Golu and sang slokas and bhajans along with the staff.
Such celebrations is an important step towards mainstreaming children with disabilities. It also helps the children acquire valuable life skills such as:
• Improve their tolerance, patience and spiritual activities.
• Relaxing their mind.
• Understanding the value of prayer.
• Behaving appropriately during prayers when they visit places of worship.
