M.S.Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation joined hands with MANASA – (District Mentally Disabled Welfare Agency,) District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Madurai & Subitcham (Family Fellowship for persons with Mental Retardation & Mental illness) along with various non-governmental mental health organizations to celebrate the 22nd World Mental Health Day on 10th October 2014, with the theme “LIVING WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA”.
During the inaugural session Dr. L.Subramaninan, IAS., District Collector, Madurai delivered Chief Guest Address and a Special Address by Mrs. R.Rajkumari, Executive Director, MSCT& RF. Smt. K.Sakunthala, DDAWO., Madurai, Smt. N.M.H.Kalaivani, President, Subitcham, Mr. K.Thirupathi, Proprietor, Temple City Group of Hotel, Madurai, M.L.Muralikrishnan, Managing Director, Kalyani Associates P.Ltd., Madurai offered their felicitation on the occasion.
This was followed by a seminar on Schizophrenia – New Hope & New Life. A street play on identification of mental illness was conducted by a cultural team from ‘Pudhu Vazhvu Mental Health Programme’ Theni District.
Dr.C.Ramasubramanian, State Nodal Officer, Mental Health Programme spoke on the identification and management of schizophrenia and he also offered tips to the care givers towards identifying the symptoms at an early stage. Mr. Shridhar, Mr. Subramanian, Mr.Kesavan and Mrs. Banudevi, the recovered persons with schizophrenia shared their personal experience under “ Challenges and Prospects”.
This was followed by the experience sharing by the care givers Mr. Venkatraman, Mr. Raguraman, Mr. Subburaman under “Parents as Partners of Care”. Mr. Govindan, Government Pleader spoke on the rights of the persons with mental disabilities focusing on various Acts related to them such as Mental Health Act, National Trust Act and PWD Act.
