Effective treatment and rehabilitation for persons with mental illness are facilitated largely by the family and the community. Supporting a person with mental illness can often be difficult and emotionally challenging. This supportive process can have a marked impact on family relationships, finances, life choices and social networks. Carers may also feel isolated in their caring role. Even with improved understanding and wider acceptance, the impact of mental illness for both consumers and carers can remain misunderstood throughout the general community. Despite these challenges, carers express that providing support for someone with a mental illness can also be a positive experience as they have been able to play an important part in the person’s mental health journey. MSCTRF offers an array of supportive programs that help build better lives for these affected persons with mental illness as well as their care givers.
